Tamil Typing Test — Complete Guide 2026
Everything you need to know before sitting for your TNPSC or TN Police typing exam
Tamil typing proficiency is a mandatory qualifying requirement for a wide range of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry government jobs — including TNPSC Group IV Clerk, Tamil Nadu Police Constable Clerk, VAO (Village Administrative Officer), and various district-level data entry posts. Clearing the written exam is only half the battle; the typing test is where many well-prepared candidates stumble simply because they never practiced under real conditions.
The Tamil typing test requires a net speed of 30 WPM, measured over a 10-minute passage. The backspace key is fully disabled — every typo is permanent and directly reduces your net score. Tamil is typed using either the Tamil99 or InScript keyboard layout, both of which are Unicode-based and accepted in government exams.
This platform gives you the exact same experience as the real exam — Tamil Unicode keyboard, backspace locked, net WPM scoring, and a proper 10-minute countdown. Practice consistently and you will walk into the exam hall with genuine confidence in your fingers, not just your preparation notes.

Tamil99 vs InScript — Which Layout for Your Exam?
Both are Unicode-based but use completely different key mappings
Tamil99 is the most widely used layout for Tamil government exams. Designed specifically for the Tamil language, it arranges keys based on Tamil phonetics and character frequency — making it intuitive once learned. It is the layout specified in most TNPSC and VAO notifications.
If your notification says Tamil typing test without specifying a layout, Tamil99 is almost always the safe default. This platform supports full Tamil99 practice with exam-standard passages.
InScript (Inscript for Tamil) is the national standard Unicode layout for all Indian language scripts, including Tamil. It follows a consistent phonetic design across all Indian languages, which can be helpful if you already type in another Indic script.
Some TN Secretariat and newer government posts specify InScript. Do not mix up the two layouts — they have different key positions. Confirm your layout from the official notification and stick with it throughout your practice.
How to Prepare — Tips That Actually Work
Practical advice for clearing the Tamil typing test from 30 WPM target downwards
Confirm Your Layout First
Tamil99 and InScript have completely different key positions. Practicing the wrong one wastes weeks. Check your exam notification on day one — then commit to that layout exclusively.
Backspace Off from Day One
If you practice with backspace enabled, your fingers will instinctively reach for it in the exam. Disable it immediately and train accuracy from scratch the right way.
Accuracy First, Speed Second
Net WPM deducts errors. A typist hitting 40 gross WPM with 15 mistakes can easily fall below 30 net. Build 95%+ accuracy first — speed comes naturally once your fingers know the keys.
30–45 Minutes Every Day
Tamil script has more complex characters than Latin, so consistency matters more. 30 minutes of daily practice for 8 weeks beats a 3-hour panic session the week before the exam.
Track Net WPM After Every Session
Write down your net WPM after each test. Watching that number grow week by week is the clearest signal of real progress — and tells you honestly whether you are on track for 30 WPM.
Full 10-Minute Tests in Final Weeks
In the last 2–3 weeks before your exam, do at least 3 full 10-minute tests daily. Exam stamina is real — typing well for 10 continuous minutes is different from short drills.
